Performance Date: April 9, 2017 (Palm Sunday)

Christ lag in Todesbanden J.S. Bach

This chorale cantata, (translated as “Christ lay in the bonds of death”) composed by Bach in 1772 when he was 22 years old, calls for small orchestra, soloists and chorus. For our performance all solos will be sung by the appropriate section rather than by individual singers. Performance time is about 30 minutes.

    Gloria Antonia Vivaldi

Another composition of the Baroque period, again sections will sing the solo parts. The orchestra will be enhanced by organ, trumpets and oboes. This piece is a favorite of many of our singers, a work that is entirely accessible and enjoyable to perform. Performance time approximately 35 minutes

    St. Nicolas Benjamin Britten

We jump to July 24, 1948, when St. Nicolas had its first performance, with Britten conducting. It is the story of the patron saint of children and sailors. Piano duet, Organ, Strings, plus timpani and nine other percussion instruments accompany the chorus and soloists which include a boy soprano and a tenor. John English will be singing the tenor and I’ll be searching for a local boy soprano.

    Performance time: 50 minutes.
